LIVRO: Sea Harrier Over the Falklands book

Na viagem que fiz até a Inglaterra achei um livro que já conhecia e tinha muito tempo que queria ler, a visão inglesa do conflito aéreo nas Malvinas. Trata-se de "Sea Harrier sobre as Malvinas", escrito pelo Cmdt. Sharkey Ward, que participou do conflito das Malvinas como comandante do Esquadrão 801 da FAA equipado com os então novos Sea Harrier, embarcados no porta aviões Invincible.
On my trip to England I found a book I already knew and wanted to read for long time, the english view of the Falklands air conflict. It is the "Sea Harrier over the Falklands", written by Cmdt. Sharkey Ward, who participated in the Falklands war as commander of the FAA 801 Squadron equipped with the then new Sea Harrier, on board the HMS Invincible aircraft carrier.

Eu já tinha lido alguns livros sobre o conflito aéreo nas Malvinas, como o "Dios Y los Halcones" em espanhol e o "Malvinas, 1982", mas sempre analisando o lado argentino do conflito.
I had read some books about the Falklands air war, such as "Dios Y los Halcones" in Spanish and "Malvinas, 1982", but always analyzing the Argentine side of the war.

O livro do Cmdt. Ward começa ainda antes da guerra, com um prelúdio interessante sobre o desenvolvimento da versão naval do Harrier, o Sea Harrier FRS.1. Principalmente porque o autor participou ativamente do desenvolvimento da versão e conhecia como poucos essa aeronave.

The Commander Ward book begins even before the war with an interesting prelude to the development of Harrier's naval version, the Sea Harrier FRS.1. Mainly because the author actively participated in the development of the version and knew it very well.

De algumas curiosidades sobre o periodo pré guerra, se destaca o pouco conhecimento que a FAA tinha do Sea Harrier e suas capacidades, além de haverem poucas unidades operacionais na época do conflito. O Esq. 801 embarcou para o Atlântico sul com apenas 6 aeronaves e com diversos tipos de armamentos e qualificações ainda sem terem sido homologadas! 

Some curiosities about the pre-war period include the FAA's lack of knowledge of the Sea Harrier and its capabilities, and few operational airplanes that they had at the time of the conflict. The 801 left for the South Atlantic with only 6 aircraft and various types of weapons and qualifications yet to be approved!

Vale ressaltar ainda a rivalidade demonstrada pelo autor com a RAF e os demais esquadrões de Sea Harrier da FAA, nesse caso o Esq. 800 que participou da guerra a bordo da capitânia da frota HMS Hermes. Diversas vezes o Ward relata a falta de perícia na operação do Sea Harrier por parte do Esq. 800 e incapacidade dos comandantes da Royal Navy de entenderem a capacidade do caça.

It is also worth mentioning the rivalry shown by the author with the RAF and the other FAA Sea Harrier squadrons, in this case the Esq. 800 who participated the war aboard the flagship HMS Hermes. Ward has repeatedly reported the lack of  800 Sqd. operation expertise of Sea Harrier and the inability of Royal Navy commanders to understand the advantages of the fighter.

O autor comenta sobre o pouco que se sabia sobre a Força Aérea Argentina, que estava sendo estudada em grande parte por uma enciclopédia Janes que existia a bordo do Invencible! Mas, pelo menos o treinamento que as equipagens tiveram antes da guerra, combatendo em treinamentos a RAF e a USAF (inclusive F-15 e F-5 Aggressors), e durante a viagem para as Malvinas foram bem feitos.

The author comments on how little was known about the Argentine Air Force, which was being studied largely by an Janes encyclopedia that existed aboard the Invincible! But at least the training the pilots had before the war, against RAF and USAF (including F-15 and F-5 Aggressors), and during the trip to the Falklands were well done.

Aliada a capacidade dos pilotos, a grande manobrabilidade do Sea Harrier e o Sidewinder versão L fizeram estrago logo nos primeiros encontros entre as duas forças. Inclusive o Cmdt. Ward relatando a tática de CAP a baixa e médias altitudes adotadas pelo seu esquadrão, que prevenia o ataque dos caças argentinos, ao contrário dos rivais do Esq.800 que patrulhavam a grande altitude e normalmente pegavam os Skyhawks e Daggers já em retirada.

Combined with the ability of the pilots, the great maneuverability of the Sea Harrier and the Sidewinder L version, they proved itself at the firsts encounters between the two forces. Including Cmdt. Ward reporting about the low and medium altitude CAP tactics adopted by his squadron, which prevented the attack of the Argentine fighters, unlike rivals of the high-flying Esq.800 who usually caught the already retreating Skyhawks and Daggers.

Por fim, recomendo fortemente o livro, que creio somente ter edições em inglês, infelizmente. É sempre bom ver os dois lados da história e entender que realmente os "hermanos" argentinos foram corajosos, conforme os próprios ingleses atestam, mas que também a Inglaterra teve enormes dificuldades para combater os argentinos muito longe de casa. 

Finally, I strongly recommend the book, which I believe has only English editions, unfortunately. It is always good to see both sides of the story and to understand that the Argentine "hermanos" were really brave, as the English themselves attest. But England too had great difficulties fighting the Argentines far from home.
