Review: Tintas Acrílicas Dryco Paints - Made in Brazil!

Vamos falar sobre tintas? Sim! Vamos conhecer de perto uma tinta acrílica especial para o nosso hobby totalmente feita no Brasil! Estamos falando da Dryco Watercolors, uma tinta acrílica base água. 

Shall we talk about paints? Yes! Let's see closer to a special acrylic paint for our hobby totally made in Brazil! We are talking about Dryco Watercolors, a water based acrylic paint.

A Dryco é uma marca conhecida no nosso mercado, principalmente devido as tintas automotivas muito bem avaliadas pelos modelistas. Neste ano a marca trouxe uma linha nova de tintas acrílicas, em diversas cores, usando a já clássica e muito bem vinda embalagem plástica de 20ml com o bico conta gotas.

Dryco is a well-known brand in our domestic market, mainly due to automotive paints very well evaluated by modelers. This year the brand brought a new line of acrylic paints, in different colors, using the already classic and very welcome 20ml plastic bottle with the dropper tip.

Comprei duas cores com o representante da Dryco aqui na minha região, branco puro (FS37886?) e Light Gull Grey (FS36440). Essa é a combinação de cores usada pela US Navy nos anos 60 e 70. Tenho essas mesmas cores acrílicas da marca polonesa Hataka.

I bought two colors to test, pure white (FS37886?) and Light Gull Gray (FS36440). This is the color combination used by the US Navy in the 60s and 70s. I have these same acrylic colors from the Polish brand Hataka.

Realizei o teste em algumas sucatas com primer e sem primer, para avaliar principalmente a ancoragem da tinta. Na embalagem a indicação do fabricante é diluir a tinta com 50% de água para uso com aerógrafo, mas para testes resolvi também testar com Álcool 65% e o Thinner Acrilico da AMMO by Mig. Antes do uso, como todas tintas acrílicas, agitei bem a embalagem.

I performed the test on some scraps with and without primer, to evaluate mainly the fixation of the paint. On the packaging, the manufacturer's recommendation is to dilute the paint with 50% water for use with an airbrush, but for tests I also decided to test with alcohol 65% and AMMO by Mig Acrylic Thinner. Before use, like all acrylic paints, I shook the packaging well.

Apliquei as duas tintas, mas não gostei do resultado com água. Achei o acabamento e a fluidez da tinta muito melhor com o álcool e com o thinner da Ammo. A tinta cinza cobriu bem com 3 demãos leves, já o branco foi necessário 4 demãos. Como ela não vem muito diluida, a aplicação com pincel é relativamente boa, conseguindo uma boa cobertura com 3 demãos. Na minha experiência para pintura de figuras ela pode ser usada tranquilamente, para cobertura de áreas maiores fica mais complicado.

I applied both paints, but I didn't like the result with water. I found the finish and fluidity of the paint much better with alcohol and Ammo's thinner. The gray paint covered well with 3 light coats, while white was required 4 coats. As it does not come very diluted, the application with brush is relatively good, achieving a good coverage with 3 coats. In my experience, for painting figures it can be used smoothly, for covering larger areas it gets more complicated.

Apliquei as tintas com uma pressão de 15-17 Psi, um aerógrafo Airtex de agulha 0,2mm.  Mas tive problemas com contaminação na tinta branca, como podemos ver na imagem abaixo. Creio que deva ser tinta seca que ficou na embalagem ou que acabou secando no armazenamento.

I applied the paints with a pressure of 15-17 Psi, and an Airtex airbrush with a 0.2mm needle. But I had problems with contamination in the white paint, as we can see in the image below. I believe it must be dry paint that was left in the packaging or that ended up drying in storage.

A solução foi filtrar todo o pote de tinta, o que fiz improvisadamente, pois tinha acabado todos os meus filtros de tintas automotivas. Mas, o procedimento deu certo como pode-se ver nas imagens. Esse tipo de contaminação é até comum em tintas acrílicas, mas nunca tinha ocorrido comigo em uma tinta nova. 

The solution was to filter the entire paint pot, which I did improvised, as I had finished all my automotive paint filters. But, the procedure worked out as you can see in the images. This type of contamination is common in acrylic paints, but it had never occurred to me in a new paint.

Depois da tinta descontaminada, lixei a aplicação anterior com lixa grão 1000 e refiz a pintura em uma das peças. Outra observação interessante é que a tinta é bem fácil de lixar, ao contrário de algumas outras marcas dessas tintas acrílicas que são mais "emborrachadas". 

After the decontaminated paint, I sanded the previous application with 1000 grit sandpaper and redid the paint on one of the pieces. Another interesting observation is that the paint is very easy to sand, unlike some other brands of these acrylic paints that are more "rubberized".

A possibilidade de lixar a tinta facilmente é uma ótima característica do produto, tendo em vista que muitas vezes é necessário retoques nos projetos que fazemos.

The possibility of sanding the paint easily is a great feature of the product, given that it is often necessary to touch up the projects we do.

Bem, depois de secas pude atestar que o acabamento tanto com o thinner da Ammo quanto com Álcool 65% ficou muito bom, com um brilho acetinado na superfície.

Well, after drying I could attest that the finish with both Ammo thinner and 65% alcohol was very good, with a satin shine on the surface.

O teste de arrancamento feito com fita Tamiya, que ficou mais de 24 horas colada na tinta, também transcorreu muito bem.

The pullout test made with Tamiya tape, which was glued to the paint for more than 24 hours, also went very well.

Como alguns amigos pediram, também testei a tinta para camuflagens mais complexas, como o "mottling" da Luftwaffe. O desempenho é satisfatório para uma tinta acrílica, parecido com as demais do mercado. Um pouco de overspray. Usei meu pior aerógrafo, agulha 0,2mm, diluição de 60% com Alcool e pressão de 10 PSI.

As some friends asked, I also tested the paint for more complex camouflages, like the Luftwaffe mottling. The performance is satisfactory for an acrylic paint, similar to the others in the market. A little overspray. I used my worst airbrush, 0.2mm needle, 60% dilution with alcohol and 10 PSI pressure.

Para concluir, embora eu tenha tido o problema dos restos de tinta seca na pintura, posso dizer que a Dryco Water Color é uma excelente opção para nós modelistas. Achei o acabamento e cobertura boa, ótima aderência e o pigmento bem fino, não apresentando aquele aspecto áspero que outras tintas acrílicas apresentam. Além de tudo isso, o preço é bem melhor que as opções importadas! Acho que agora é esperar a oferta de cores aumentar e quem sabe alguns sets temáticos? 

To conclude, although I had the problem of dry paint remnants in the painting, I can say that Dryco Water Color is an excellent option for us modelers. I found the finish and coverage to be good, great adhesion and the pigment very fine, not having that rough look that other acrylic paints have. In addition to all this, the price is much better than the imported options! I think now is to wait for the supply of colors to increase and maybe some themed sets?
