Olá! Hello!

Recentemente terminei de ler mais um livro sobre esse que foi o maior conflito ocorrido na América do Sul. Mas, é só mais um livro sobre a Guerra do Paraguai ou da Tríplice Aliança que já foi muito tratada na América do Sul e também em publicações internacionais como os livros da Osprey abaixo, entre outros.

Isso demonstra a importância do tema para a história e formação sócio cultural da porção sul da América do Sul. Além disso, a história do próprio conflito, ainda desconhecido por alguns, é muito rica. Tratando de batalhas épicas com exércitos com mais de 50 mil homens no campo de batalha e batalhas navais fluviais, sempre muito mais complexas e desconhecidas.
A influência europeia e indígena em todas as partes do conflito, evidenciada nos armamentos, táticas, costumes e roupas de ambos os exércitos.
Enfim, o conflito teve uma grande influência na história do Brasil e infelizmente é pouco retratado pela comunidade plastimodelista. Porque será? Falta dados de pesquisa? Modelos e kits? Interesse?
This demonstrates the importance of the theme for the history and socio-cultural formation of the southern part of South America. In addition, the history of the conflict itself, still unknown by some, is very rich. Dealing with epic battles with armies of more than 50 thousand men on the battlefield and river naval battles, always much more complex and unknown. European and indigenous influence in all parts of the conflict, evidenced in the armaments, tactics, customs and clothing of both armies. Anyway, the conflict had a great influence on the history of Brazil and unfortunately it is little portrayed by the scale modellers community. I wonder why? Is research data missing? Models and kits? Interest?

Bem, em termos de pesquisa, como já falamos, temos diversos livros sobre o assunto. Veja os links no fim do post para conferir. Já os modelos, realmente pode ser um problema, pois itens específicos são raros e na maior parte das vezes serão necessárias conversões.
Well, in terms of research, as we already said, we have several books on the subject. See the links at the end of the post to check it out. Models, on the other hand, can really be a problem, because specific items are rare and most of the time conversions will be necessary.

Podemos dividir o conflito em três áreas do modelismo, a parte naval, as figuras e os dioramas. Em principio o tema mais abundante e mais facilmente abordado são as figuras e os dioramas. E talvez esse seja o tema mais retratado e mais fácil de conseguir informações da época. Bons livros, ilustrações, pinturas de época e até fotografias.
We can divide the conflict into three areas of model making, the naval part, figures and dioramas. In principle, the most abundant and most easily addressed topic are figures and dioramas. And this is perhaps the most portrayed and easiest subject to obtain information of the time. Good books, illustrations, period paintings and even photographs.

No caso das figuras, pode-se utilizar como base figuras Europeias como os Zuavos Franceses e fazer a versão nacional dos Zuavos da Bahia.

Ou então utilizar sets e figuras da Guerra Civil Americana para conseguir fazer a maioria dos soldados da Tríplice Aliança.

O maior problema mesmo seriam os soldados do Exército paraguaio, pois em muitos casos não usavam uniformes, sapatos, gorros etc. Então, esse seria o maior desafio.

Figuras e kits prontos é difícil de achar, mas mesmo assim existem algumas opções. Como as figuras da Perry Minuatures ou as fabricados por Jose Tuñon das Figuras Tuñon da Argentina.

Figures and ready-made kits are hard to find, but there are still a few options. Like the figures of Perry Minuatures or those made by Jose Tuñon of the Figures Tuñon made in Argentina.

Com essas figuras, canhões ingleses e cavalos, já é possível fazer dioramas das principais batalhas da guerra. Houve grandes batalhas que são temas sensacionais para dioramas, como a passagem de Humaitá ou a Batalha de Curupaiti, por exemplo. Essas poderiam ser representadas em um diorama que mistura tropas terrestres e navais!
With these figures, English cannons and horses, it is already possible to make dioramas from the main battles of the war. There were great battles that are sensational themes for dioramas, like the Humaitá passage or the Battle of Curupaiti, for example. They could be a diorama that mixes land and naval troops!

Já na parte naval fica ainda mais complicado, primeiro porque não existem, até onde pude pesquisar, kits navais que representem navios da guerra ou algo parecido. Ou seja, para modelismo naval a solução é modificações radicais ou scratch build.
In the naval part it gets even more complicated, first because there are not, as far as I could research, naval kits that represent warships or something like that. In other words, for naval modeling the solution is radical modifications or scratch build.

Até porque os navios da época são muitas vezes belonaves quase que artesanais, produzidas em poucas unidades e com características especificas definidas pelas necessidades do cliente. Desta forma, a maior parte dos modelos são encontrados em museus como os das fotos abaixo.

Especially because the ships of the time are often craft ships, produced in few units and with specific characteristics defined by the customer's needs. In this way, most models are found in museums such as those in the photos below.

A Marinha Imperial Brasileira era a armada mais poderosa do continente, contando com canhoneiras, corvetas e fragatas blindadas (encouraçadas).

Na época os navios eram movidos a vapor, com propulsão mista à vela. A maioria era construída de madeira com blindagem e os mais modernos de construção metálica.

Enfim, é realmente surpreendente que nós modelistas brasileiros tenhamos dado pouca atenção para um tema tão interessante e importante para nossa história! E ainda mais que tenhamos diversos materiais para pesquisa em mãos, mesmo na internet. Creio ser um dever como cidadão brasileiro honrar a memória dos que pereceram no conflito, não importando a nacionalidade, pois foram todos nossos antepassados.
Anyway, it is really surprising that we Brazilian modelers have paid little attention to such an interesting and important theme for our history! And even more that we have several research materials on hand, even on the internet. I believe it is a duty as a Brazilian citizen to honor the memory of those who perished in the conflict, regardless of nationality, as they were all our ancestors.
